When operating your own business from home it doesn't mean that
your private life is an open book to be read by the world. You
would have to set boundaries for your professional and private
life to insure that your work is not constantly interrupted by
your family and friends. You will have to establish specific
hours for work and at end of the work day go home. If you allow
your home business to consume every moment of your day you will
surely burn out and this will create a huge interruption to your
private and family's life.
If you could afford it at the inception of your business you
should have a separate telephone line that is only for the
businesses also install an answering machine to collect messages
after working hours, only if clients leave messages that are
absolutely an emergency then call them back on the next working
day. If at all possible, try hard to avoid giving out your home
phone number to your customers as an additional contact . You
never know if your son or daughter will answer the telephone
leaving a really bad impression on an existing or potential
clients.
There are several services that will cross paths between your
personal life and work life and trying to understand where they
meet will assist you keep stay sane when operating from your
home. When you are now starting a home business, it might be
very easy for your spouse and family members to ask you to do
odd jobs around the home while they are out at work. You would
have to gently remind them that you are at work and will be
working and that you don't have the time to do laundry, wash the
dishes, or maybe just step out and pick up a few items in the
supermarket.
Unless your home business requires you to meet with customers
and you can't get around it, try not to entertain customers and
business partners at your home. The best thing is that clients
under no circumstances should know your house address. Using
telephone and email for customers contact is probable the best
way to maintain privacy, as you would not want an angry clients
knocking on your door while you are eating dinner with your
family. A P.O box does not cost allot of money and can be very
useful for shipping and can help you protect you and your
family's privacy.
Don't forget, this is your bread and butter and you must try to
keep at the top of your head that your wife, husband and kids
are not staff members. You might be working out from a home
office but remember it is also your family's house and you must
ensure you have set boundaries in place. Just as you don't want
them stepping over into your work space when you're working, you
must show the same degree of respect to your spouse and family
members by not allowing your work to cross over into their
personal space. If you would like to know more check out the
