The Coach sez . . . the smartest investment is in yourself.
Would you like to be paid to speak? Learn how to connect
with your audience? Persuade people to act on what you say?
You can get answers to these questions and more through
my new feature, Approach the Coach. Go to the web page http://www.schrift.com/approach
and ask me your number-one question about speaking skills
or speaking professionally. Now you can read my answers
on a special Q&A page at:http://www.swchrift.com/approach/questions01.html
Poet, David Whyte, reminds us that there is nothing more
transforming to the American workplace than the multiple
decisions now being made by some organizations that put
"soul life above the abstracts of organizational life.
I notice that many young people refuse to work in faraway
cities that were formerly necessary for advancement and
rob them of their family's presence. The new organization
will honor the soul and the soul of the world; an organization
that is as much concerned with what it serves as what it
is.
The Coach asks . . . do you know of an organization where
a worker is celebrating his (her) soul at work?
ON BUSINESS LESSONS
I have been an entrepreneur for 23 years and these are some
of the lessons I learned: (often the hard way)
Pay attention and plan for the future
Delegate
Adapt to Change
Avoid denial - cut losses and get out
Develop realistic goals
Engage in open communication
Brand - quality service is not the cheapest but the best.
Don't under price your services or people won't take you
seriously.
Work on your biz, not in it. (Spend time with yourself,
family, friends, etc.) A lesson I learned from the "E-Myth"
by Michael Gerber.
The Coach thinks the key is . surround yourself with good
people. Can you contribute to this list?
ON WRITING FROM SCRATCH
How do you write a book from scratch? Laura Baker, author-coach,
suggests that when you wake up in the morning, tell yourself,
"I'm going to brainstorm today an let the ideas flow."
Keep a notepad handy and write down whatever pops into your
mind without censoring it. At the end of the week, and not
before, take a look at what you wrote down. Make an appointment
with yourself to write for one hour each week. Don't read
what you've written! Continue this process until you have
the core material for your book. www.author-coach.com
ON A PROP-CULTURE PHENOMENON
What is generic, like Kleenex, Q-Tips, Jell-O? It is the
BlackBerry, a handheld, high tech toy to help us communicate
. . . all the time! "By the time Oprah Winfrey called
it one of her favorite things in 2003, BlackBerry had become
a verb. When I am at the gym, my judging mind sees this
addictive device as the CrackBerry. You are liberated from
the office but never from the clock. Information is readily
available, but does that make us wiser or just overloaded?
Whatever happened to face to face communication?
The Coach sez . . . the lesson here is to find out what
people want (need) and learn how to sell it.
